Easy Applesauce Cake

Adding applesauce to the batter gives this snack cake a lightly sweet and subtly tangy flavor, while the buttermilk brings richness to this recipe that's hard to describe.

While this cake isn't as heavily spiced as many other apple cakes it's still full of fantastic flavor, but don't take my word for it, just try it for yourself!

If you like heartier cakes use a chunky applesauce and if you like a lighter, smoother cake use one that's finely pureed.

Whichever one you choose, you are going to love how moist and delicious it makes this coffee cake.

Easy Applesauce Cake Recipe

  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1/3 cup buttermilk
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 teaspoon lemon zest
  • 2 large egg whites


  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup golden brown sugar
  • 3 tablespoons softened unsalted butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Batter Directions

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.

In a large mixing bowl sift and combine your flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt and sugar.

In the center of your dry ingredients whisk together your buttermilk, oil, egg yolk, the vanilla, applesauce and lemon zest.  When those have been mixed together, bring in the dry ingredients and mix until the entire mixture is moist and thick.

In another bowl beat your egg whites until they form stiff peaks and then fold it into your batter.

Pour the whole batter into a 9 inch round greased pan and then prepare the topping.

Topping Directions

In a small bowl, combine all the ingredients and mix until fully incorporated. Sprinkle the topping so that it covers the top of the entire cake batter.

Bake for approximately 30 minutes or until your toothpick shows it is done. Cool for little while before serving this applesauce cake, either a little warm or fully cooled.
